My Story

Let me tell you a little flashback story. Back in my college days, I often found myself loving writing even more than the chemistry labs I was studying for. It started in the grueling research labs of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, surrounded by glass beakers, molecular models, and the existential dread of writing lab reports.

If you’ve ever had to write a chemistry lab report, you know it was intense. But try multiplying that by having to submit 2 to 3 full-length lab reports on a weekly basis—and to make it even wilder, lab reports during my time were entirely handwritten and could not be typed. I was trained hard to ink down data with absolute, cold precision, accounting for every single decimal point, error margin, and chemical reaction mechanism multiple times a week without the safety net of a backspace key. Yet, funny enough, during those sleepless university nights, I realized I actually loved the act of writing itself. I just loved it a lot more than the actual chemistry experiments I was formatting reports for!

That deep love for creative writing became my escape, leading me to launch a free WordPress site during those same university years called Septimo Cielo (which means “Seventh Heaven”). My debut article was titled “10 Ways to Be Happy”—which is hilarious to think about now, because it is a world away from the science-backed niche I’m in today. I’m pretty sure that old free account has long since vanished into the internet archives, but back then, it was my absolute sanctuary. It was a space where I could escape the relentless data, unleash my imagination, and just talk to the world without worrying about standard deviations or chemical formulas.

Never in a million years did I think those two conflicting worlds would collide. If you told college-era me, while I was drowning in ink and drafting my third handwritten lab report of the week, that I would eventually spend my days writing passionate, deep-dive articles about skincare and hair serums, I would have laughed you right out of the lab.

But then, the global K-beauty and skincare craze hit.

As I browsed beauty aisles and read popular blogs, the chemist in me couldn’t help but look at the actual ingredient decks. I noticed a frustrating pattern: the beauty industry was flooded with aggressive marketing fluff, pseudo-science, and viral trends making massive promises with zero biochemical evidence to back them up. Consumers were left totally guessing, mixing incompatible active ingredients, wrecking their skin barriers, and wasting hard-earned money.

That was my lightbulb moment. What if I could combine my hard-nosed, high-volume training in chemistry writing with my genuine love for storytelling? What if I could use my words to break down the heavy, complicated formulation science and translate it into something everyone could easily understand?

That is exactly how the idea for The Chemist Beauty Insider was born.

And so, armed with my trusty pen (or rather, fingers on keyboard) and fueled by a passion for unraveling the best skin care combination through chemistry, I set out to share my discoveries with the world.
